What are the installation options for a ground source heat pump (GSHP)?

There are three installation options with a GSHP; each one requiring slightly different considerations. These options are trenches, boreholes and installations next to large bodies of water, such as lakes.

A common requirement with all of them, however, is the need for internal space to install the buffer tank and water cylinder. A GSHP requires a network of coils to be buried underground or submerged in a body of water, where it can draw heat energy used by the heat pump to meet the energy needs of the building.

Which heating and cooling emitters can I use with a heat pump?

Any hydronic heating and cooling emitter such as fan coils, radiators or trench heating, could be used with a heat pump.

There are a number of factors, however, which will ultimately impact the final specification. These include thermal requirements, such as whether the building needs heating only or heating and cooling, control requirements and design preferences, such as whether to have the emitter recessed or on view.

How do I know what capacity fan coil I need?

Working out what capacity fan coil unit you need requires a lot of factors to be taken into consideration from the outset of a project, including solar gains. These include building orientation, geographical location, envelope construction materials and infiltration alongside internal gains such as lighting, equipment and occupancy. These will have to be considered with any potential plans to install solar shading, as they all have an impact on the predicted performance of a building.
